This post/tutorial is designed to help you get up to speed with Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (MHGU). Whether you’re a veteran or brand-new to the series, MHGU stands out as one of the most unique entries in the franchise. As you may know, it’s an anniversary/celebration title—absolutely packed to the brim with content.

All you need to start is a Nintendo Switch, a Switch Online subscription if you want to play with others, and of course—the game itself. It goes on sale frequently, so just keep an eye out and grab it when it does. It’s absolutely worth it.

Now… if you’re not interested in buying a Switch just for one game, or you don’t want to pay for online, or if your reason is something like “the game looks too ugly,” or “it’s not an 8K PC Master Race piece of art”—then, sorry, I can’t help you. You can look into other methods, which I won’t mention here. Personally, I don’t support them while the console and the game are still very much alive and accessible.

Now… Let’s Get It Out of the Way – Should You Rush to G-Rank?

Short answer? No.

Long answer? Also no, but with context.

MHGU is not like newer Monster Hunter games where the game “starts” at High Rank or Master Rank. This game is designed to be a full journey—from Low Rank Village quests to G-Rank endgame. Skipping straight to G-Rank might seem tempting (especially if you’ve played other titles), but you’ll just end up frustrated and underprepared.

The early ranks are there for a reason: to teach you the monsters, get you used to your weapon, and most importantly—help you build muscle memory and gear appropriate for the challenges ahead. If you rush, you’ll miss out on learning crucial mechanics like Hunter Arts and Styles, and the transition to G-Rank will feel like hitting a brick wall.

But hey—if taking your time doesn’t suit you, and you really want to rush to G-Rank, then go for it. It’s your hunt, after all.

Just do yourself a favor and check out the spreadsheet below. It highlights important unlocks like expanded item storage, access to key armor pieces (some of which are used in tons of mix sets), and other progression-critical quests that are easy to miss if you’re speeding through.

Cool! Where Can I Learn More About My Weapon?

The older games didn’t exactly hold your hand when it came to understanding your weapon. You had to figure things out on your own—or rely on the community. MHGU is no exception, so you’ll need to do some research to really master your weapon.

One major issue with MHGU (and many older games) is that everyone thinks they’re an expert, which can make things confusing. A good place to start is the Yet Another Weapon Guide series. Fair warning, though—sometimes the author gets a little too opinionated (like their hate for aerial bow). Still, it’s packed with useful info on every weapon and style. And let’s not forget their dislike for Prowler. Don’t listen to that. There are plenty of Prowler mains who hunt just as effectively and have just as much fun as any other hunter!

But old monster hunter games are dead?!

Hell no! There are streamers who still play all the old-gen games to this day. It might not be 24/7, but Generations Ultimate is alive and kicking, with a strong community still going strong!
