One Stream, Two Audio Mixes

I have spent enough time streaming to know how quickly audio routing can turn into a nest of devices, virtual cables and sliders whose purpose I no longer remember. You change one volume because something is too loud in your headphones. A minute later, someone tells you the stream can barely hear it. You fix the stream, and now the same sound is blasting into your ears.

For a long time, that felt like the unavoidable cost of having a more complicated setup. It is not. The problem was that I was treating two different mixes as if they had to be the same.

OBS is my broadcast mix. Windows Mixer and Voicemeeter are my personal listening mix. The same application can enter both paths, but each path has its own routing, mute state and volume.

The split happens at the application

OBS can capture application audio directly with Capture Audio (BETA) and Application Audio Capture (BETA). I can point a source at a game, a browser, a music player or another application and bring that audio into OBS without depending on the volume I hear through Windows.

At the same time, that application still has its normal local playback path. Windows Mixer decides which output it uses and how loud it is locally. Voicemeeter receives that output, mixes it with everything else I want to hear and routes the result to my headset.

One application. Two parallel paths.

Stream path: Applications → OBS direct capture → OBS mixer → stream.
Listening path: Applications → Windows Mixer → Voicemeeter → headset.

OBS decides what the audience hears

Inside OBS, I choose exactly which applications belong on stream. Each direct-capture source has its own fader. I can mute it, hide it with a scene, process it with filters or route it to a specific track. None of that requires me to change how loud the application is in my headphones.

This matters because the correct level for an audience is rarely the correct level for the person sitting at the computer. Music may need to sit quietly behind my voice on stream, but I may want it louder while waiting. A game may need a healthy level in the broadcast mix while being much quieter for me so I can concentrate on conversation.

OBS handles those broadcast decisions. That is its job.

  • OBS (stream mix): application capture sources, source faders, mutes, filters, scenes and audio tracks determine what the audience receives.
  • Windows + Voicemeeter (my mix): per-application routing, Windows volume, Voicemeeter strips, A buses and headset volume determine what reaches my ears.

Voicemeeter decides what I hear

My local mix starts in Windows. Each application can have its own output device and volume in Windows Mixer. Those outputs feed Voicemeeter, where I can combine them, send them to the physical output I want and set levels that make sense for me.

That gives me several local controls before sound reaches my ears: the application's Windows volume, its Voicemeeter strip level, the A-bus level and the headset's physical volume. They belong to the listening path. Moving them does not mean I have to disturb the OBS mix.

This is the part that makes the setup feel less fragile. I no longer reach for an OBS fader just because something is uncomfortable in my headphones. I adjust the path that is actually causing the problem.

What this lets me do

The practical advantage is not some abstract promise of flexibility. It is being able to make ordinary decisions without breaking something elsewhere.

  • Stream loud, me quiet: raise the application source in OBS and lower its Windows or Voicemeeter listening level.
  • Stream on, me muted: leave the OBS direct-capture source active and mute the application's local listening path.
  • Stream off, me on: mute or hide the source in OBS while keeping its Windows and Voicemeeter path active.
  • Different balance: make music subtle for the audience but prominent for myself, or the opposite, without compromise.

There is a trade-off. Two mixes mean two places to look. If the stream cannot hear an application, I check OBS capture, mute state and track routing. If I cannot hear it, I check Windows output selection, Windows volume, the Voicemeeter strip, the A bus and the physical device. That is more routing to understand, but the boundaries are clear.

Clear boundaries beat one giant mixer where every slider affects everything.

The rule that keeps it understandable

I keep one simple rule in mind whenever I touch a volume control:

Change OBS to change the stream.

Change Windows Mixer or Voicemeeter to change what I hear.

That is the whole architecture. OBS captures the applications I choose and builds the audience's mix. Windows and Voicemeeter build mine beside it. The two paths start from the same software, then go where they need to go without fighting over a single set of levels.

One machine. The same applications. Two mixes - each answering to the person it was made for.
